Workshop on ‘Energy Transition Scenarios’ in Eggenburg (Austria)

On 26 May 2025, the third workshop on ‘Scenarios for the Energy Transition’ took place in Eggenburg. After a brief review of the first two workshops, two scenarios (‘Business as Usual‘ and ‘Clean Energy Transition’) were used to illustrate the range of possibilities for shaping the energy transition in Eggenburg. The following topics were addressed, taking into account the spatial impacts:

  • settlement development and business development,
  • increasing efficiency to reduce energy consumption,
  • energy-efficient building refurbishment,
  • energy-efficient transport,
  • expansion of renewable energies for electricity and heat supply.

In the subsequent poster discussion, participants pointed out both new opportunities and limitations for the realistic implementation of the possibilities presented. For example, the revitalisation of the town centre and the refurbishment of buildings were seen as important measures, but the possibilities here are limited due to heritage protection. On the other hand, the municipality sees great opportunities in rooftop and ground-mounted photovoltaic systems and in alternative mobility solutions (e.g. car sharing). These assessments will be incorporated into further work.

At the end of the workshop, the multiple benefits of the energy transition were presented. These benefits are triggered directly or indirectly in various areas (e.g. economy: local jobs, health: better air, resilience: independence and crisis prevention).
The project results will be shown at the final event on 25th September 2025 in Eggenburg.
