Capacity Building in Austria

On June 10 and 19, 2024, two capacity-building events were held with the pilot municipalities of Eggenburg and Horn as part of the European Plenty-LIFE project. The aim was to promote initiatives for sustainable urban planning. The event was attended by representatives and employees from both municipalities and generated a great deal of interest.

Two modules were presented on June 10, 2024: The event started with Module 1, which focused on smart and sustainable urban planning and was presented by colleagues from BOKU representing EURAC. The contextual framework of smart urban planning was explained and the strategic approaches were highlighted, which included land use planning, project assessment, governance and resilience strategies. Module 2 dealt with integrated energy planning and was presented by colleagues from AIT. The presentation gave a brief insight into energy planning and introduced the energy and climate policy instruments. This was followed by an explanation of the integrated energy system analysis and the energy transition. Finally, options for formulating a strategy for the transition to clean energy were presented.

Module 3 on integrated spatial and energy planning was held on June 19, 2024. The focus was on how the spatial conditions for energy savings, efficient energy use and the promotion of renewable energy can be created. After brief inputs from the BOKU colleagues, the participants used the Energy Mosaic Austria (www.energiemosaik.at) to discuss energy consumption in the own municipality. Based on maps of the case study municipalities, appropriate areas for district heating and climate friendly mobility were analysed. In addition, the spatial differentiation of energy demand was also discussed, broken down by land use types, purposes of energy consumption and energy sources in various sub-areas of the municipality.
